Borealis Group AG, a chemical company, has reportedly initiated a new project to secure a high supply of chemically-recycled feedstock to produce more circular base chemicals & polyolefin-based products. A feasibility study has already begun for a chemical recycling unit to be built at the Borealis production site in Stenungsund, Sweden. The Swedish Energy Agency has awarded a grant to fund the project in part.
The feasibility study has been carried out with Stena Recycling, a project partner, which will be in charge of recovering the plastic wastes and delivering them to the chemical recycling unit. Furthermore, it is planning to invest in its own facilities to develop circular plastic solutions through the production of the feedstock of plastic wastes to the chemical company.
The operation of the new unit is anticipated to begin in 2024, following the successful feasibility study & final investment decision. The unit will integrate chemically recycled feedstock through the mass balance model to boost its transformation to plastic circularity. Additionally, Borealis will independently co-operate with Fortum Recycling & Waste on a new project.

According to the Executive Vice President of Base Chemicals & Operations at Borealis, Martijn van Koten, the company has set several circular economy goals as a part of its commitment to ensuring sustainable living, which can be evident from the integration of the Borcycle C technology into its cracker in Stenungsund, Sweden. This initiative has enabled it to supply a sufficient quantity of chemically recycled base chemicals & polyolefins to the market by placing a robust focus on collaboration, innovation, and other strategies.
