Resolution Medical 3D-prints nasopharyngeal swabs for COVID-19 testing

Minneapolis based Resolution Medical- an in vitro diagnostic and medical device manufacturing company has reportedly announced the introduction of The Resolution Medical Lattice Swab, developed using Carbon™ technology.

Reportedly, the company has sent samples of the novel 3D printed nasopharyngeal swaps for the testing of coronavirus to healthcare organizations and will provide swabs across the United States through their website.

For the record, patient testing swabs are one of the most essential supplies that are needed by the medical practitioners to facilitate the testing of COVID-19. Adequate availability of testing kits and increasing the frequency of testing is an integral part of the identification of rising coronavirus cases.

Apparently, the new Lattice Swab developed by Resolution Medical showcases a conformal lattice design that is developed using Carbon’s Lattice Engine software technology. The hollow structure of the lattice is developed to ensure the efficiency of specimen collection with a geometry that is also flexible to promote comfort, reliability, and functionality for patients.

As per reports, the product is undergoing a clinical evaluation by clinicians at various health centers such as Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, a teaching hospital associated with Stanford Medicine and Harvard Medical School.

According to Shawn Patterson, Founder and President of Resolution Medical, the company aims at providing the lattice swabs to healthcare professionals as soon as possible to facilitate accelerated COVID-19 testing. The company aims at supplying more than 1 million swabs per week, he further stated.

Citing reports, Resolution Medical works in collaboration with Carbon’s network of dental labs and manufacturing partners to make the Lattice Swab, along with its internal printing team that uses Carbon M2 printers and KeySplint Soft® Clear material developed by Keystone Industries. The material is designated for the fabrication of dental and orthodontic equipment like nightguards, mouthguards and snoring appliances across Canada, U.S., Australia, New Zealand, and EU.

The new lattice swabs are autoclavable and biocompatible and are currently being printed in hundreds, featuring a unique serialization mentioned on each strip to ensure traceability.
