FPL plans to build largest solar-powered battery in the world

FPL Manatee Energy Storage Center is expected to start serving customers at the end of 2021 with the capacity of 409 MW.

Florida Power and Light (FPL) has unveiled a plan of building world’s largest battery system powered by solar energy which will have 4 times more capacity than the largest battery system in operation. Reportedly, this project will be a part of innovative modernization plan which will quicken the retirement of two fossil fuel generation units.

According to Utility Dive, the FPL Manatee Energy Storage Center is expected to start serving customers at the end of 2021 with the capacity of 409 MW. This storage center will be charged by a current FPL solar power plant located in Manatee County.

At the time of high electricity demand, FPL will counteract the requirement to run other power plants by deploying energy from the batteries, further dropping emissions and saving customers money by avoiding fuel costs. The FPL Manatee Energy Storage Center will be constructed on 40 acres of land.

Eric Silagy, President and CEO, FPL stated that the announcement is a milestone in realizing the full benefits of solar power and yet another example of hard work of FPL to position Florida as the global gold standard for clean energy.

The FPL Manatee Energy Storage Center will be a part of an innovative modernization plan to quicken the retirement of two units generating natural gas from 1970s-era near FPL and swap them with renewable and clean energy. With the Manatee County’s energy storage system, FPL has planned installations of smaller battery all over the state, several solar power plants and efficiency upgradation of present combustion turbines present at other power plants for replacing the generating capacity of 1,638 MW. The project is expected to save more than $100 million for customers and eradicate emission of carbon dioxide by more than 1 million tons.

The investments of FPL in battery storage technology will help company in expanding solar energy. The company currently has 18 solar power plants in operation and construction of four more will start soon.
