JDR Cable Systems Ltd., Parker Hannifin Corporation, Leoni Group, Hydro Group, Hengtong Marine Cable Systems, Ningbo Orient Wires & Cables Co., and Nexans are some of the major manufacturers of offshore wind cables. These companies are constantly looking towards investing in research and development to introduce innovative products. Citing an instance, at CIGRE 2018, Nexans unveiled a new range of cabling solutions, including submarine cables, inter-array cabling, subsea interconnectors, and export cables for offshore and floating wind farms.

Offshore wind cables are typically made of aluminum or copper. Copper cables are slated to witness substantial adoption across inter-array and export cable applications. This can be largely associated with properties such as high electrical ductility, heavy lead bearing capabilities, low failure rate, and non-magnetic characteristics. 66kV inter-array cables, which are mainly made of copper, are rapidly gaining prominence in offshore wind power generation, which will bolster offshore wind cable industry outlook.

The past few years have witnessed an increased number of offshore wind energy projects, which has propelled the need to boost transmission voltage levels. These trends are likely to fuel the adoption of export cables in the near future. Export cables offer a range of advantages including higher operating efficiency, and better thermal conductivity. Governments across many regions are actively investing in utility scale projects, which will offer lucrative opportunities to offshore wind cable manufacturers.

For example, JDR Cable Systems had delivered subsea cabling accessories and solutions to Jan De Nul for the installation of inter-array and export cables at Taiwan Power Company’s Changhua Phase 1 offshore wind farm scheduled to begin in June 2020. Reportedly, JDR had designed, manufactured, and delivered 65 kilometers of inter-array and export cables.

In terms of the regional outlook, Europe offshore wind cables industry is anticipated to record substantial gains in the upcoming years. The regional government has introduced favorable regulatory policies and framework to support renewables deployment. For instance, in 2017, Germany had introduced the WindSeeG [Offshore Wind Act] to centralize the planning approach for wind power generation. Constant technological developments along with similar initiatives to accelerate offshore wind infrastructure development will complement the regional outlook.

As the global need for efficient power transmission continues to increase, a new generation of high-performance, reliable, and efficient power systems will be critical to keep pace with the renewables trend. Ongoing transition towards sustainable energy generation solutions is likely to offer promising opportunities to offshore wind cable manufacturers. In addition, the introduction of stringent regulations by respective governments to promote the adoption of renewable energy will augment the industry forecast.
